January 3 is the birthday of the architect of Middle Earth, J.R.R. Tolkien. Fandom tradition requests a “toast” on his birthday. I contemplated having a reception, but after the holidays, and the Trilogy viewing on December 28th, I thought the membership was a bit “partied out” and decided to forgo it this year. What I do ask is that, at 21:00 (9 p.m.), January 3, take a moment wherever you are, raise whatever you are drinking and and say the words ‘the professor’ before taking a sip. Then sit and enjoy the rest of your drink. If you would like to share your toast with middle earth, you can go to the Tolkien society website and post your toast. Fare well wherever you fare on the third and I look forward to reading his greatest works with the group. We will begin reading the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and begin discussing it online and in person at the January meetup.
